He joined at the age of 42.  He was the father of Alonzo Clingan, who then enlisted to take his father's place in the ranks.

Following the war, he earned the Congressional Medal of Honor as a member of the 5th US Infantry Regiment Co I,  in
the Indian Campaigns.  He was killed in battle with the Native Americans on 9/11/1874 at Upper Washita, Texas.  His
body was never recovered..
